CNN anchor Jake Tapper predicted on Wednesday's "The Reason Interview" podcast with Nick Gillespie that Generation Z—Americans aged 13 to 28—will be "a lot more conservative" than prior generations due to skepticism from progressive views forced on them in schools by Gen Xers and millennials. Tapper, host of "The Lead with Jake Tapper" and father of two teenagers, based the assessment on his experience with his children and their friends. He faced Democratic backlash earlier this year over his book detailing former President Joe Biden's mental decline.
Tapper attributed the shift to failures of progressive movements including Sen. Bernie Sanders' campaigns, Black Lives Matter, and MeToo, plus COVID policies and "a lot of progressive politics being forced down their throats in school." He stated: "Just my experience knowing Gen Z kids – my kids and their friends and whatever – I sense much more skepticism."

In the 2024 election, Gen Z favored Kamala Harris over Donald Trump by 4 points, down from Joe Biden's 25-point edge in 2020, per Harvard Kennedy School research. Trump did not win young voters but outperformed prior Republicans among them. An April NBC News Stay Tuned Poll with SurveyMonkey showed 45% of young men approved of Trump versus 24% of young women; 52% of Gen Z women identify as Democrats—the highest of any age/gender group—while one-third of Gen Z men do.
