GUSHING GAVIN: Magazine writer slammed for sexualizing Calif. gov. in puff piece

Vogue magazine published a profile on California Governor Gavin Newsom on February 4, 2026, written by journalist Maya Singer.
The article described the 58-year-old Democrat as "embarrassingly handsome" with hair "seasoned with silver," portraying him as lithe, ardent, energetic, and Kennedy-esque, with a glimmer of optimism in his eye. It highlighted his family life, noting a stunning wife and four adorable kids, and his professional endeavors, including teasing a potential 2028 presidential run, delivering his final State of the State address, and hosting a podcast called "This Is Gavin Newsom." The piece praised his communication skills, calling him fantastic at gab and comparing him to a windup doll, while stating he appeared immaculate in molecular reality.
The profile drew sharp criticism on Fox News' Outnumbered program, where co-host Emily Compagno labeled it "gushing" and "frankly inappropriate," comparing it to an OnlyFans advertisement and noting that similar language about a female politician would cause an uproar; she argued it should have addressed substantive issues like California's budget and homelessness crisis. Charles Payne remarked that the article used "a lot of words" to mask Newsom's lack of substance and qualifications, likening it to puff pieces on Barack Obama and calling it embarrassing for all involved, urging Vogue to avoid such content to better inform voters. Lisa Kennedy described it as "smutty erotica" and insisted all politician profiles should be skeptical. Kayleigh McEnany said she couldn't finish reading it due to "weird" passages, such as one about a "California magic-hour glow" and having a hard time taking in the man. Harris Faulkner called it an "ad for Only Fans," "straight up nasty," and "the 51st shade [of Grey]."

Social media users echoed the backlash in comments on the Daily Mail's coverage. One user, Musicmaven from Boomtown, United States, called Newsom a "moron" and "pencil necked, tiled toothed, hand waving lying jerk," disputing his handsomeness and referencing his past affair with his best friend's wife, who was also his campaign manager. MyGawdYourDense from Scottsdale, United States, described him as "one of the ugliest human beings" inside and out, recalling his unmasked dinner at a fancy French restaurant during COVID restrictions while mandating masks and stay-home orders for constituents, labeling him a "loser" and "liar." MilePatioSkirt from Las Vegas, United States, questioned how much taxpayer money Newsom paid Vogue for the piece.
